The concept transcription or Yeeeepeeeeeee, we won!

A few years ago I stumbled upon a certain feature film titled »Modigliani« (2004, directed by Mick Davis, featuring Andy Garcia as Modigliani). Far too trivial for my liking, since even the name of the protagonist is relentlessly mispronounced, still the film frequently seems to serve me as an example of a poor yet common perception of a painter's life and work. The story of the film revolves around the competitive relationship between Modigliani and Picasso, the absurdity culminating in the very act of a »painting contest«, where the winner is obviously the one who receives the louder applause. Quite a sporting event, indeed. Two competitors, canvas, paint and the obligatory »ready-steady-go!«. Art as a measurable compound, pure show bussiness and means to achieve wealth and immortal glory.

Certainly it goes without saying, that great masterpieces have a certain aura, a timeless aura that does not depend on a spectators disposition. It is hard to pinpoint though, what elevates one masterpiece above others, as they cannot be tackled with a scale, stopwatch or a metre. Also, »beauty is in the eye of the beholder«, yet history has proven, that certain artefacts are simply Better than the other. Still, living here and now, we wish to demonstrate what is prettier, better, more artistic in real time. It's best we have an Art Competition.

Off course it has to be won. We can pat ourselves on the back for as long as we want, seek comfort in the participation itself, but at the end we drag ourselves to the glass of the grand-opening-champagne and try to hide the tail between our legs.

That is why Beli sladoled vehemently raise their noses above the competition and create their own private parallel universe, where little children and big painters fulfil their every desire. They build their own »stairway to heaven« (»podium to heaven«) and stand on the very top of the pedestal, where they wait to hear the boarding call for New York.

Vljudno vabljeni na slovesno splavitev Ladje norcev umetniške skupine Beli sladoled, ki bo v četrtek, 1. aprila 2010 ob 19. 00 uri v KAPSULI, Podhod Ajdovščina 1, Ljubljana.
Projekt se ukvarja s prenosom nenavadnih praks v polje umetnosti, z namenom razkrinkanja življenjskih absurdnosti. Zasnovan je za projektni prostor KAPSULA, v katerega bosta avtorja postavila objekt – ladjo norcev – po principu gradnje ladje v steklenici. Pri tem ju bo snemala kamera, ki bo nastopala kot priča, da je gradnja potekala po pravilu. Pravilo pa je, da sama ne smeta vstopiti v prostor, ampak morata objekt vanj »vstaviti« od zunaj. Dostop do objekta je tako mogoč samo od zunaj in to velja tako za avtorja (sestavljanje skozi vrata) kot tudi za gledalce (opazovanje skozi stekleno steno). Prvi ključni moment projekta je torej v absurdnosti po nepotrebnem oteženega akta postavitve in obenem opazovanja objekta (na sami razstavi bo predstavljen le zaključen objekt in posnetek postavitve). Drugi ključni moment pa je sam motiv ladje norcev, ki že s svojo zgodovino uporabe kaže na celo vrsto absurdnosti. Pri Platonu nastopa kot prispodoba za neučinkovitost demokratične ureditve, v likovni umetnosti in literaturi pa kot prispodoba za izločevalni odnos do družbeno nekoristnih oseb (norcev in drugih).

we found 2 BELI SLADOLED history things...

1999 - Miha / Leon(Beli Sladoled) first year on the academy. they showed this old clip on the TV yesterday talking about the neverending space problem on the academy of fine arts in ljubljana. In the first year we were not really friends, on the contrary....the drawing chemistry came later in the 2nd year.

2005/06 - this is where we officially started BELI SLADOLED.we came up with that name while working on the animated cartoon series BIZGECI. our co-animator misunderstood us while talking about group's name and said belisladoled...the rest is history

just came from tuzla where i personally had my best group exhibition so far. it was actually the first show after the ART OF ASFALT group broke up. the title of the exh. said it all; OPUŠTENO, we worked without being conditioned to work as a group, no pressure at all(bosnian style)...and guess what...the quality of all the works was a BIG surprise and success.
when i came home i realised that the last paintings i did (before i left for bosna) were those two micro ramps. it was funny because in tuzla i did a big indoor ramp sculpture....with a small grass patern and a silver stone on it. it was all related to the city decoration(hehe) that inspired me for the whole week...at the end i decided that it was my little homage to mr.jackson(rip), after all, BAD was my very first tape i bought as a kid*
